“Yes, there is weakness, there is frailty, but there is courage also, and honor to be found in Men. But you do not see that. You are afraid! All your life, you have hidden in the shadows, scared of who you are, of what your are!”

One of my favorite Extended Scenes scenes ever, and Boromir’s quote is just fantastic.

John Noble & Sala Baker Interview: Reliving LOTR Memories

Here are some fun excerpts from John Noble’s interview during the DVD Blue-Ray release of the LOTR Trilogy.

John Noble’s Favorite scene:

“We shot a beautiful scene for ‘The Two Towers,’” recalls Noble of a flashback that was reinserted. “It was Sean Bean, myself and David Wenham – I loved that scene. Apart from the fact that I just love working like that with Sean Bean. Then in the second there were a couple of quite powerful scenes that had to be cut. One scene in particular, I remember it was so hot, and I had to fall over in it a lot. And Peter Jackson kept saying, ‘That was great. Do it again.’ And I was bruised and battered all over the place. And that didn’t go in to the cinema but it came into the next one and I was very pleased to see. I was rewarded.”

Sala Baker’s Favorite scene:

“There was a cool sequence that we shot which was actually my favorite shot that was never in the movie,” says Baker. “In the forging of the ring, I have this golden nugget in my hand as Sauron. And I put my hand over the Edge of Doom and the gold melts into a liquid form. And I have this little dagger – Sauron ends up stabbing his hand and mixes the gold with the blood. And then when I bring it up it forges the one ring. And I was like, ‘Cool, dude!’ And it wasn’t even in the movie.

Sala on his fondest behind the scenes memories:

“We were doing the première of the first movie and Viggo [Mortensen] goes, ‘Sala, go and head-butt Orlando Bloom right now,’” remembers Baker. “Because when Viggo and I and a bunch of the stunt guys used to go out we used to do shots. As a brotherly love kind of gesture he would head-butt you. Viggo goes, ‘Do it. Do it. Do it.’ And I was like, ‘Hey, Orlando, bro – I love you, dude.’ WHAM! And I got in trouble because the next day makeup was like, ‘Why does Legolas have a big red dot on his forehead?’”

John Noble on his fondest behind the scenes memories:

“Two of my daughters came to visit me, and they were only teenagers at that stage. And, of course, they had a wonderful time – they were able to hang out with Elijah [Wood] and Billy [Boyd] and all the young fellows. That was kind of special for them.”

John Noble on the LOTR Filming experience as a whole:

“I remember in a big meeting of actors once, John Rhys-Davies once saying in his big voice, he says, ‘This is the finest ensemble of actors that’s ever been gathered’ – because John liked to do that sort of thing,” says Noble. “But what he meant was that the energy that existed in that room of people was amazing.”

L-O-T-R Blog’s Adventure To AMC Theaters: Reliving The Return Of The King

I finally got home and after a small snack, I am ready to give my final account of my journey to Middle-earth after three magical weeks.

With much excitement, we raced to AMC Theaters to truly relive the Return of the King on the big screen. I have never seen the Extended Versions of all the movies in full so these three weeks have been wonderful for me.

While we were waiting for the film to start, I could not help but think about how slow time was passing! The show was to start at 7PM and yet people were already in their seats before 6PM. For the last time, we were treated to some more trivia questions, “How many years did Gollum posses the ring?” for example.

Then, it was time for Peter Jackson’s message from Bag-End while he films The Hobbit. Jackson says that they filmed the Trilogy continuously and that Return of the King was already filmed by the time ‘Fellowship’ came out in theaters. He said that the year they were editing Return of the King was a very stressful year because he wanted to make sure the pay-off for the end of the films was satisfying for the audiences.

Peter Jackson then highlights that he loved history and that he had always wondered what it would be like to see six thousand horses thundering down a plain, something Jackson was able to experience at the Battle of Pellenor Fields. Jackson made sure the animations department put in 6 thousand horses. He laughed you can’t exactly go counting the horses because the scenes were so quick but he swore there were six thousand horses.

Lastly, Peter Jackson gave special mention to Howard Shore who he said, “truly outdid himself” in composing the score for the Return of the King. Jackson said that the score really culminated everything from film one. With that, the New Line Cinema logo sweeps onto the screen for the last time and we are off, seeing Andy Serkis in the flesh and blood for the first time in the Trilogy.

Notes On The Movie

  • Out of all three weeks, the crowd was very respectful and quite through all the movies BUT…The first applause of the TRILOGY was for….Eowyn when she delivers her famous, “I am no man” line. The second time was when Legolas brings down the Oliphaunt. And the very last time we got applause during the film was when Aragorn turns around after being coronated; we cheered and clapped along with the extras in the movie!
  • Seeing all those lovely extended scenes made me rue the fact that Peter Jackson took out all of Faramir’s (David Wenham) extended scenes! Truly, the extended scenes with Faramir were really special and stood out. David Wenham was the perfect Faramir.
  • For some reason, the audience in my show were just cracking up in laughter during the Fellowship reunited scene when Frodo wakes up and says, “Gandalf?” It was pretty hilarious that everyone was randomly laughing.
  • There were some giggles in the audience when Legolas made his Captain Obvious line of the movie ,”A Diversion.”
  • It was great to see that Merry, Pippin, and Sam really come into their own in the last film and the audience gets to see true character development.
  • The extended scene where Faramir and Eowyn meet in the Houses of Healing was just the best scene and I ***sqeed*** internally because it was amazing. WHY YOU REMOVE THAT SCENE, PETER JACKSON????!!!!
  • When the Witch King was on screen, anytime, it was pure MAGIC. I got chills, when he pulled out his sword and said in that cold voice, “My hour is now.” The extended scene between The Witch King and Gandalf was immensely powerful.
  • Another special moment was the fight between The Witch King and Eowyn, it gave me absolute chills. Just brilliant.
  • Bernard Hill knocked it out of the park during his epic speech when the Riders of Rohan finally reach Minas Tirith. “DEATH!!”
  • Then, Viggo Mortensen upstaged Bernard Hill when Aragorn cried out, “I bid you stand, Men of the West!”
  • Karl Urban brought the intensity to the this movie and he had great screen presence in the few scenes he is a part of.
  • I was very excited to see Sean Bean as Boromir in the movie! I loved that fact that Peter Jackson truly brought the cast together for the final film.

I had such a wonderful time and I am so said that these three weeks are over. But I am so thankful that I got to experience ALL of the Lord of the Rings movies on the big screen as they were intended to be seen.

Farewell. At the edge of these shores, L-O-T-R Blog’s adventure ends. My work is ended. I will not say, “Do not weep” for not all tears are evil. Our Blog, forever bound my friendship and love, will continue, nonetheless!

L-O-T-R Blog’s Adventure To AMC Theaters: Reliving The Two Towers

I have just returned from watching The Lord of the Rings the Two Towers at AMC Theaters. What an adventure, indeed!

This time around, we arrived at AMC Theaters early, about 6:15, and found, much to our delight, that our show had been moved to the largest theater in the building. AMC definitely learned from last time and gave the Lord of the Rings a bigger room. As before, many had come to experience the film but there were plenty of seats for audiences still arriving.

While we waited for the film to begin, we were once again treated to the Two Towers score playing majestically in the background while a whole new slew of trivia questions kept us entertained. Once again, theonering.net is a proud sponsor and a lovely promotional video of WETA Workshop plays. Then, the lights darken and the audience claps as Peter Jackson shows up on screen, from the set of The Hobbit.

This is a new introduction from Peter Jackson, different from the introduction we got in the screening for the Fellowship of the Ring. Peter reminds us that the Trilogy has recently been remastered and he was very excited for us to be seeing them. Jackson comments, “We wanted the Two Towers to have a story of it’s own.” He says that they wanted the middle chapter of the Trilogy to have a unique story and not just be a vessel to carry the last chapter.

Peter Jackson praises the work of Andy Serkis, who plays Gollum and laughs that the Battle of Helms Deep was something he had dreamed of doing as a child. He comments about the difficulty to shooting the sequence and the grueling schedule the cast/crew had to endure for those three months. Peter laughs, “Now we just think of the good times we had filming the Battle of Helms Deep,” then adds, “There weren’t many good times, actually.” With that, Peter Jackson bids us goodbye and we are once again in Middle-earth, watching as Gandalf battles the Balrog.

Notes On The Movie

  • Their were big laughs for the comedic scenes including Sam, Merry, Pippin, Gollum, & Gimli. The interactions between Legolas/Gimli & Merry/Pippin/Treebeard drew a big reaction from the audience and they absolutely adored those scenes.
  • I am happy to report that Legolas’ famous quote, “THEY’RE TAKING THE HOBBITS TO ISENGARD” drew many scattered giggles in the room.
  • After watching the Two Towers extended edition, I really, really wish that Peter Jackson & the crew had left in all of Faramir’s extended scenes! Watching David Wenham’s performance was just brilliant and his scenes really stood out.
  • You guys all KNOW I was watching in absolute delight when they showed the Extended Scene is Osgilath between Boromir/Faramir/Denethor! That scene was so meaningful and just chills folks, chills watching Sean Bean’s performance.
  • I was pleased to see that the extended edition gave us and opportunity to know more characters throughly like Boromir, Faramir, Eowyn, and Gollum. I must say, the chemistry between Miranda Otto & Viggo Mortensen was great and the scenes came of effortlessly.
  • There was also some Merry & Pippin shenanigans that I loved like the two of them finding Saruman’s store room! Billy & Dom have great chemistry and the audience really enjoyed the times that the two Hobbits were on screen. They really bring some light to a rather dark film.
  • I know I’ve said before that I didn’t really enjoy the Battle of Helms Deep, but this viewing totally changed my opinion. The battle looked great on screen and the sound was amazing and intense. You felt as though you were being swept into the battle!
  • The Extended Edition really gave John Rhys Davies, who plays Gimli & Treebeard so fantastically, a chance to really shine. His comedy was on point and he brought a lot of joy to the screen. Treebeard and his extended scenes were hilarious.

Well, I hope you all enjoyed that write up of my exprenice watching the Two Towers! I will be going back to AMC to watch the Return of the King next week and I am SO excited. I will be writing about that too so don’t fret!
